Sergeant Isabelle Loveland

The first woman to make the rank of Sergeant in the Glens Falls Police Department was Isabelle Loveland, born at Shelving Rock on Lake George and a graduate of Glens Falls High School.

Working as a secretary in the Police Department and completing  FBI and State courses in police work, she trained in judo and earned trophies for marksmanship with handguns. Sergeant Loveland finished second best on the force in off-hand shooting under the FBI scoring system.

She continued with clerical duties in the department, made arrests, and took statements from prisoners. The policewoman was appointed Sergeant after passing the Civil Service test, and she retired from the department after 49 years of service.

She was active with the Zonta Club and the Colony of New England Woman, and was named Woman of the Year for services to the community by the Glens Falls Business and Professional Women's Club in 1968.

She was married to Donald Loveland
