Detective Cornelius D. Kennedy

A native of Ireland, Cornelius D. Kennedy joined the Glens Falls Police Department in 1898, when the community was still a village.

Until the city was established and a permanent police force was appointed in 1908, his service was intermittent, subject to the whims of village patronage. He was one of the first ten men named to the permanent department.

In 1921 he was promoted to Detective, being recognized for his wide knowledge of lawbreakers and for his exceptional memory. He solved many of the major crimes occurring during his tenure.

Described as fearless, he was willing and able to use physical force when defendants attempted to flee custody. His brother Patrick J. Kennedy was a member of the Glens Falls Board of Public Safety, His son C. Edward Kennedy was a Sergeant on the force at the time of his death.

Cornelius Kennedy was survived by his wife, four sons, and two daughters.
