Citizens Police Academy

The Glens Falls Police Department conducts a Citizens Police Academy twice a year. A regular session for adults is given in the Winter/Spring and a teen session is given every fall. The nine week academy is held once a week for nine weeks. Classes are held at the Waste Water Treatment plant on Shermantown Road in Glens Falls.

The purpose of the academy is to give the public a working knowledge of the Glens Falls Police Department through a series of classes involving instruction by police officers and other criminal justice professionals. Previous speakers have included Warren County District Attorney Kate Hogan, Police Chief Joseph Bethel and Glens Falls City Court Judge Richard Tarantino. An effort will be made to cover all aspects of law enforcement. Upon completing the course, students will have an excellent overview of what their police department does and whit it has to offer it's citizens.

It is the police department's intent to open communications between residents and the officers that serve them. Topics covered will include patrol and detective divisions. The penal and vehicle and traffic laws. The court and correctional systems. Firearms and less lethal weapons, narcotics investigations and Police ride-a-longs. The course will include a mock crime scene with students collecting evidence and lifting fingerprints. Instruction will be done by Glens Falls police officers and guest speakers.

The regular session is open to anyone at least 18 years old and the teen session is for 14 to 19 year old students. Applications can be obtained from the Office of the Chief of Police at 42 Ride Street. Interested parties can also obtain an application by contacting Captain William Valenza at
